AJ Kupfer of the New York Post reports on the latest details of a disturbing incident in which a police officer choked in custody is suing the department. The NYPD officer, who was not identified by authorities, told investigators he was intoxicated when he began to walk towards a line of officers in a Bronx park in 2012. The New York Post reports that when he tried to grab at a female officer’s vest, she began to choke him. The officer was then reportedly held down while another officer administered CPR on his wife until an ambulance arrived after hours.According to the Post, the officer had been with the department for more than five years — including as a patrol officer in the South Bronx and an inspector in the South Bronx Police Department. He also worked as a rookie officer in the Bronx. According to the Post, the incident took place as he was making arrests.Kato says that she and the officer’s wife had been “enamored” with each other and had been “frequenting the South Bronx park when the officer was not there.”She calls the incident “a cruel, callous act of an officer who had become intoxicated and lost all control.” “At that point, the officer should have said something, should have stopped whatever was going on in his body, and left him to the paramedics,” she said. The department says the officer is “obviously very upset” by the lawsuit. It says that although it can’t comment publicly, it expects to defend itself against this situation in court.”The NYPD Patrol Division will aggressively defend the actions and policies of its officers and vigorously investigate incidents involving any type of force, inappropriate conduct or misconduct, including those involving misconduct by supervisors,” the department said in a statement.
